A Investigate Study on Spiritual Wellbeing of Cancer Patients


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the spiritual wellbeing of cancer patients and the correlation between spiritual wellbeing and demographic data and disease characteristics.
The subjects for this study were 86 patients who were diagnosed as having cancer and they were visited in Radiotheraphy departments of four hospitals which have over 500 beds in Pusan Korea. Data was collected from August 1, 1995 to August 25,
1995
by
an investigator interviewing with a questionnaire.
The measurement tool for spiritual wellbeing was a questionnaire which consisted of 20 questions answerable on a 4 point Likert sale developed by palantizian and Ellison(1982), translated by Choi Sang Soon(1990) and modified by the investigator
from the
original 6 point for use with cancer patients.
The collected data were prepare for computer analysis and analyzed using appropriate methods.
Demographic characteristics, disease characteristics and the score of spiritual wellbeing were analyzed by descriptive statistical methods.
To see the difference between the demographic characteristics and the spiritual wellbeing score and the disease characteristics and the spiritual wellbeing score. T-test and ANOVA were used.
For the correlation between spiritual wellbeing and the demographic and the disease characteirstics, Pearson correlation, Multiple regression analysis and Stepwise multiple regression analysis were used.

@EN 1. The mean score for spiritual wellbeing in cancer patients was 53.44 in a possible range of 24.80. Among the components of spiritual wellbeing, the mean score for religious wellbeing was 25.16 in a possible range of 10-40, and for
existential
wellbeing 28.28 in a possible range of 14-40. From the above, the cancer patients perceived their state of spiritual wellbeing as high And the mean score for existential wellbeing was higher than that of religious wellbeing
2. There were statistically significant difference in the three parts of spiritual wellbeing according to the religious affiliation, and the existence of religion. There were high and positive correlation between total spiritual wellbeing and
firstly,
religion affiliation and secondly, the existence of religion. There were also correlation between religious wellbeing and firstly, religion affiliation and secondly, the existence of religion. Religious affiliation a affected spiritual wellbeing
most
significantly of all with 1% level of significance. And it accounted for 50.04% of total spiritual wellbeing.
3. There were statistically significant differences in the three parts of spiritual wellbeing according to the perceived health status and the perceived health status affected existential wellbeing most significantly of all and it affected

total spiritual wellbeing with 1% level of significance of it accounted for 55.67% of total spiritual wellbeing along with a religious affiliation. Also there was positive correlation between the three parts of spiritual wellbeing and the
perceive
health status.
There were statistically significant differences in existential wellbeing accoridng to the level of vigor and the perceived pain statu as disease characteristics. But there was no difference in spiritual wellbeing and religious wellbeing
according
to
these characteristics, and there were weak positive correlations between spiritual wellbeing and the level of of vigor, between, spiritual wellbeing and the perceived pain status.
